Advocacy

Disability Awareness provide an independent advocacy service for people with disabilities which promotes equality, social justice, social inclusion and human rights.

The following principles underpin all the advocacy work undertaken:

• A person centred approach
• Clarity of purpose
• Independence

The types of advocacy offered includes:

• Individual advocacy-support with reviews and decision-making, and promotion of wellbeing and rights.
• Group advocacy-supporting groups to contribute to decision-making processes and speak up collectively about issues of importance to them. Examples include service review and provision, independent house meetings in residential and supported living placements, group meetings and consultation in day service and education settings, and representation at committee level on policy and procedure making.

With qualified training in Intensive Interaction, Makaton and Signs of Safety, Disability Awareness uses communication methods to suit the needs of the individual. And provides a totally independent service to support people to have their say.
